Biking to Stay Fit
By Emily Lupfer, Grade 11
Fall is here and school is in full swing. For most of us that means long days sitting at a desk at school, logging into our FLVS courses, and trying to keep up with homework. The active days of summer are over, and exercising is the last thing on our minds. Besides, who has the time with juggling math tests, flute lessons, and planning upcoming holiday gatherings?
Bicycling is a fun way to get some exercise so you can stay healthy and feel great during the holiday season and the rest of the school year. The best part is, you can do it with friends and family members and it's a great way to take a break from school and get out in the crisp fall air. Just be sure and follow these top ten safety tips to help make your bike rides the best they can be.
- Always wear a helmet, even when just pedaling down the street to see a friend.
- Always remember to tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back.
- When riding with friends, avoid staring at the rear wheel of the bicycle in front of you. This will cause you to easily miss important things around you.
- Always have both hands on the brake.
- If for any reason you need to brake while riding downhill, always use the back break first.
- Familiarize yourself with how your bike works, and give it routine check-ups.
- Always obey the rules of the road.
- When riding on a road with motor vehicles, use hand signals to show when you are turning and stopping. Never assume a driver sees you.
- Dress appropriately for the weather, and the time of day. For example, at dusk it's best to wear bright colored clothes.
- Always have a water bottle with you to stay hydrated.
Break out of your neighborhood and enjoy a trail ride at your local state park, or go off the beaten path and explore the lakes and forests in your area. Whatever your ideal biking location, stay safe and have fun.
