Making History March 1789 – Congress announces the formal ratification of the Articles of Confederation. March 1880 – Salvation Army was founded in the U.S. March 1961 – President John F. Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps March 2009 – Florida Virtual School students view launch of Space Shuttle Discovery online. Some of you may be thinking that last entry is a typo. How can viewing a shuttle launch online be just as important as the creation of the Peace Corps? Perhaps, but let’s review. A few years ago, students would likely see a shuttle launch on the news if they remembered or from their backyard if the sky was clear.  And years before that, students wouldn’t even see the launch on the news but only read about it in the paper. Now, through an Elluminate session set up with NASA, students at FLVS could log online and view the shuttle launch from the comfort of their laptop. Although the planned launch on March 11th had to be scrubbed by NASA, the opportunity to view a space shot with other virtual students is still on the horizon. Some of you may still not agree this is quite as fascinating, but we at News in a Click consider this and the many other online sessions that are presented at FLVS to be just as newsworthy as anything you would see on your nightly news. The NIAC staff knows what it’s like to be at the forefront of technology and education, and can’t wait to share it with you, our readers, each month. And if you miss the online launch, don’t despair. There’s plenty of exciting events happening at FLVS such as the third annual Virtual Science Fair, exciting book talks like “The Number Devil” and “Three Cups of Tea” and the Florida High School Model United Nations, where FLVS will send a team of students to participate. April looks to be just as exciting with Earth Day festivities and the Second Annual Shakespeare Festival. We at NIAC can’t wait to share these stories with you.
